The following is a brief description of the pictures.
All of these pictures are within the few years of the
club being formed, which makes it around 1987 to 1989.
I believe this is an award being presented.
However, I could be wrong and it might be a tug of war
with a sock between Taro Ariga and Andreas Draesner
I think the person on the right may be BJ Lee. BJ was
our secret weapon in 1st-2nd dan category. His skill
level was quite high. BJ showed up occasionally during
years 1-3.
Dave Seto was was a founding member.
Poor Dave - it looks like nobody wants to sit beside him :-)
Approximately half the people in this picture are visitors
from other dojos - which demonstrates how much the other
clubs helped us out in the early years.
I expect this was year 2 or 3, because Taro Ariga had a new Do
(you can see Sayuri (white Keiko-Gi) admiring it instead of
looking at the camera. Susan (Choi) Zau (far left 2nd row)
also has a brand new Do. Taro was able to get great deals on
equipment - long before the birth of e-bogu.
Jim Cogill and RJ White.
Jim (on the right) was a founding member.
RJ White and Susan (Choi) Zau.
This picture was probably taken late 1989, just before RJ
moved to Europe.
Taro Ariga & RJ White - the best looking dudes of the club.
Susan (Choi) Zau sparring with someone who I can't make out.
Susan (Choi) Zau on the left (wearing the red Do) sparring with someone.
Danny Saruyama - who died in a car crash in 1989 at the age of 21.
Danny was with the Etobicoke Kendo club and he helped us out alot
in starting the UW Kendo Club. He was the nicest guy you'd
ever meet. He was a 3rd year student in history and political
science at the University of Toronto,
Another picture of Danny, saying Welcome to our club!
Not sure what tournament this was taken at.
From the left: Dave Seto, Jim Cogill, Ms Tateno, and Sam Ng.
Ms Tateno is the daughter of Tateno Sensei of the Brantford
Kendo Club. Tateno Sensei helped us alot in the first few
years - particularly while Taro was in Japan preparing for
the upcoming world championship.
Several folks waiting to leave for a tournament somewhere.
From left to right: RJ White, Sam Ng, Marcell Stoer, and Soon Lem.

RJ White is in the center since he's the best looking dude, with
Taro Ariga (UW Kendo Club Sensei on his left and visiting Sensei
Paul Morgan on his right from Hamilton dojo.
A UW Kendo Club team picture with several visitors.
This one was chosen because it has visiting Danny Saruyama in it.
